Color as a record of lived experience.
Sofia Ren is a New York–based painter whose practice examines how places are remembered after their details begin to fade. Working in oil, pigment, and cold wax, she builds translucent surfaces through repeated acts of covering and revealing.
Her compositions move between landscape and abstraction. Fragments of architecture, weather, and handwritten notes appear briefly before dissolving into broad passages of color. The resulting paintings feel both immediate and archaeological.
“I think of every layer as a version of the same memory—changed slightly each time it is recalled.”
